In this Biology/Medicine session, Dr Sophie Kellaway, Assistant Professor on the Cancer Sciences BSc at University of Nottingham, will run an interactive talk for students on Leukaemia – Understanding Blood Cancers & The Role of CAR-T Cell Therapy.

In this session we will explore how CAR-T cell therapy is saving lives and changing the way doctors treat blood cancer. We will find out why certain types of blood cancers called acute leukaemias are so difficult to treat and how T-cells engineered with “chimeric antigen receptors” i.e. CAR-T cells are helping improve patient outcomes.

Together, we will work through an example of how scientists designed and engineered a CAR-T cell to treat a teenager with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (T-ALL) that did not respond to chemotherapy.

We will wrap up by looking at some of the current challenges associated with CAR-T cell therapy for the next generation of researchers to solve.
