DESCRIPTION:Register here \n  \n  \n \n  \nIn this Biology online event for schools and colleges\, Dr Tom Hartman from the School of Life Sciences at University of Nottingham will examine Organisms & Changes in Their Environments. \nPeople collect all sorts of things. Some might collect pressed flowers or coins\, typewriters\, shopping bags\, stamps\, insects even Pokémon Go! When they are placed in a museum along with information on when and where they were found they become an archive of information which\, with modern technology takes us to the cutting edge of science. \nThere are many museums and other collections that are using their specimens to look back in time and see how the distribution and abundance of different species has changed. Who would have thought that objects collected\, sometimes\, hundreds of years ago might be a treasure trove of knowledge about DNA\, pollution and population change. \nWe will have a look at a few examples of how their stories tell us about their response to a changing world and find that nature can still surprise us. \nLecturer Profile (Please Click): Dr Tom Hartman \n\n  \nOur events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals\, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures. \nAs a live\, participative event\, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event\, where available. \n  \nSuitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying\, or with a possible interest in studying\, Biology and related disciplines. Student groups\, and individual students and teachers are very welcome to join us. \nPreparation/Pre-Reading: Students may wish to consider the topic and discuss some of the key elements in advance. Students can also think about questions they have about studying Biology at university level. \nThe IT Setup: The event will be run on Bluejeans (similar to Zoom) and participants will be able to join using laptops\, tablets\, and mobile devices. If you are joining as a school group\, we recommend connecting with one device and projecting on to a whiteboard. You will be able to interact with the university via a microphone and/or typed comments and questions.
