In this Biology online event for schools and colleges, Dr Tom Hartman from the School of Life Sciences at University of Nottingham will examine Organisms & Changes in Their Environments.

People collect all sorts of things. Some might collect pressed flowers or coins, typewriters, shopping bags, stamps, insects even Pokémon Go! When they are placed in a museum along with information on when and where they were found they become an archive of information which, with modern technology takes us to the cutting edge of science.

There are many museums and other collections that are using their specimens to look back in time and see how the distribution and abundance of different species has changed. Who would have thought that objects collected, sometimes, hundreds of years ago might be a treasure trove of knowledge about DNA, pollution and population change.

We will have a look at a few examples of how their stories tell us about their response to a changing world and find that nature can still surprise us.
