If you enjoy A Level Biology there’s a wide range of degree options available to you. Biology courses span the breadth of life from the molecular biology of our cells, to the human body’s response in health and disease, and the evolution, ecology and conservation of biodiversity. In this interactive talk, three biosciences academics from The University of Sheffield will explain the various options open to you.

If you’re interested in discovering what it’s like to be a biology student; what different specialisms like biochemistry, biomedical science, conservation biology or zoology involve; want to find out how you’ll be taught, from hands-on lab sessions to fieldwork and research projects; or you’re keen to learn about the range of exciting careers that are open to biologists then this talk is for you.

The University of Sheffield is renowned for its excellence in Biosciences, being ranked 7th in the UK for Biological Sciences (Times Good University Guide 2019), number one for medical research and in the top five for biological research in the UK (Research Excellence Framework, 2014).

Suitable for: Specifically for Year 12 and Year 13 students studying Biology and/or students who may be interested in studying Biology at university.

Lecturer Biographies (Please click): Dr Andrew Beckerman, Dr Louise Robson, Dr Patrick Baker

Preparation or Pre-Reading: We recommend that students consider some questions in advance relevant to the subject matter and their particular interests in further study of Biology.

The IT Setup: The setup is similar to Skype, using a pc and webcam, although students take part as a group with the image projected on a whiteboard rather than as individuals in front of lots of pcs. Dedicated videoconferencing equipment is also compatible if available to the school. We will work with your IT department to ensure everything is set up and working prior to the event. The sessions are generally limited to 4 or 5 schools to maintain the interactive nature of the experience.

Booking a Place: If you have a group of students that you would like to take part in this event, please contact us via email or via the contact form at the top right of this webpage (or at the bottom if on a mobile device). Subject to availability we will book a place for you. These sessions are free to schools and colleges to attend.
