Arts & Humanities: Find Out About Flexible Arts Degrees at Glasgow With Dr Kenneth Brophy & Dr Joanna Kopaczyk, University Of Glasgow
25th June 2018 @ 14:30 - 15:30
The MA Arts degree at the University of Glasgow offers students the opportunity to create their own curriculum in the first two years of study choosing from 30 individual subjects before moving to any one of 400 single or joint honours programmes.
This interactive webinar will outline how the degree is structured and what makes Glasgow a great place to study the arts and humanities: with research excellence, enviable student satisfaction ratings and access to a wealth of cultural resources available in the University and the City.
Taster sessions with Archaeology and English Language and Linguistics will give a taste of two of the subject areas that could make up part of your flexible MA Arts degree.
Dr Kenneth Brophy will talk about doing Archaeology at University and getting your hands dirty finding out about the recent and ancient past! One of the best ways to understand people who lived thousands of years ago is through studying their bodies so you’ll learn, through looking at some archaeological discoveries about a rich prehistoric burial Dr Brophy excavated, about cremation and burial in the Scottish Bronze Age. You will also hear about why archaeology is more of an art than a science when it comes to making sense of the stuff we find.
Dr Joanna Kopaczyk will talk about how in English Language and Linguistics you can study the most intricate, powerful and beautiful aspects of our most valuable human asset – language. Have you ever wondered how we create meaning from air, marks on the page, or digital txt? Is it ‘you’, ‘youse’, or ‘y’all’ – and what happened to ‘thou’?
In English Language and Linguistics you will look at English (and Scots!) sounds, words (braw!), structures and texts in a rigorous way, and become an expert in exploring, understanding and exploiting communication past and present.
