In this Accounting/Business session, Dr Denis Lima e Alves, Lecturer in Accounting in the Norwich Business School at University of East Anglia, will lead an interactive talk on Detecting Accounting Fraud.

Accounting fraud is where mathematics, economics, and real-world decision-making meet. In this session, you will see how financial numbers can be manipulated, why firms sometimes take extreme risks to hide poor performance, and how analysts, auditors, and regulators uncover the truth.

You will visualise how ratios, probability, and statistical models help flag suspicious behaviour long before courts become involved. We will debate the incentives that drive executives to commit fraud, the market consequences when fraud collapses, and the careers that sit at the intersection of data science, finance, and law.

This interactive talk shows how your mathematical and economic skills can be applied to high-stakes investigations that protect investors, employees, and the public.
