In this Accountancy/Business session, Victoria Tiplady, Lecturer in Accounting at the Norwich Business School, University of East Anglia, will run an interactive skills and insight workshop for students on Company Accounts: Gaining Rapid Insights into the Nature & Health of a Business.

Victoria asks the question: ‘Thomas Cook – what went wrong?’

Thomas Cook failed at 2am on Monday 23 September 2019 and stranded 150,000 UK holidaymakers. How did this happen to a company that was 178 years old?

We will take a look at Thomas Cook’s accounts to see if its failure could have been predicted, without the use of a crystal ball. We will also look at how company accounts can be useful to many people for different reasons.

The session will develop skills and approaches to support students in their current studies and future aspirations.

Our events are designed so that a group of students can take part from a classroom or students and teachers can take part as individuals, either from school or from home. This means that sessions will continue irrespective of possible school closures.

As a live, participative event, this session will not be recorded but slides and other resources will be shared after the event, where available.

Suitable for: Year 12 & 13 students (and equivalent) studying, or with a possible interest in studying, Accountancy and related disciplines.
